Patty and the Pandemic – A book written by McMaster University medical Student, Nicole Crimi

Nicole was just 6 years old when SARS-CoV came to Canada in 2003.. Nicole’s own frustrations and fears towards a lack of understanding – about the virus, her general health, or the world around her – experienced throughout her youth, are part of what drove her to seek out a medical education. Nicole believes that knowledge helps give one power over their own life and as a result, can greatly alleviate stress.

In 2020, a new coronavirus changed the world.  Nicole’s own awareness and understanding are what comfort with the restrictions brought about by Covid-19.   However, seeing her young nephew, Adam, and reflecting on all of the rites of passage of childhood that he – and the rest of the “COVID-19 Kids” – will be missing out on, she couldn’t help but be taken back to the times when she was just a child and struggling with something similar.

As such, Nicole had the idea to create a simple, fun, and relatable children’s book that empowers children through education, and creates a feeling of being in this together – as one of “Patty’s pals”. In creating “Patty and the Pandemic” – with the support of her classmates, mentors, and community – Nicole aims to create an even larger community of all ages, where everyone has the privilege of feeling educated, empowered and ready to “defeat the bad bug” – together!

Proceeds from book sales of Patty and the Pandemic available at pattyandthepandemic will be donated to Face the Future™ Foundation.
